Varsity Football 2008

Varsity Football Gains Recognition

While Pursuing State Championship

For the second consecutive year, FACS barely missed a run at the state championship, losing in sub-state finals to Harding 13-6. Still, FACS posted an impressive 9-3 record in regular and post-season play.

Several varsity players were recognized in prep circles. Seniors Dan Gant and Andrew Brimhall were chosen for the prep all-star game. Gant also was nominated as “Mr. Football.” According to available statistics, Brimhall became FACS’s all-time leading passer this season and broke the school’s record for yards passed during a single game against Davidson Academy. In that same game, junior Dane Leake broke the school’s record for most receiving yards. Junior Dane Wilson carried the ball for more than a thousand yards during Crusader games this fall. Following the heartbreaking loss to Harding, The Commercial Appeal still called Wilson, with 176 yards rushing, “the offensive star of the game.” Wilson had rushed 200 yards the previous week against St. George’s Independent School.

FACS is recognized for sportsmanship throughout our region. The school has received the TSSAA District 9 “Principal of the Year Award,” for overall school character and sportsmanship for the second consecutive year. Harding Academy Dean of Students Paul Goddard passed along this quote from a Harding player’s parent following the Crusader’s post-season loss: “Clayton said that FACS (students) are some of the best opponents he’s ever played against.  He said they’re great sports. …That’s what it’s about, being Christian young men ALL THE TIME.” Senior Andrew Brimhall further proved this point by winning the meaningfull "Bull Bramlett Award" at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Liberty Bowl Breakfast. The award is given not only for performance on the field but also for Christian character off the field. Brimhall was selected from among more than 30 players nominated by private and public schools throughout the Memphis metropolitan area.
